“How many deaths have you overseen?” Maggie asked.

He paused—only slightly.

“I have no idea. Billions, I would imagine.”

She looked at him, surprised.

He shrugged gently.

“But that’s only from your perspective. From mine… I simply arrive and say—

it’s time.

And a soul sets aside one set of garments

 to step into another.”

He glanced sideways at her.

“The soul itself doesn’t end.

 It changes rooms.”

She smiled faintly.

“And yet people are so afraid of you.”

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“But they are not afraid of me.

They are afraid of what they believe I take… rather than what I actually return.”

Nothing is lost— only moved beyond the way we are used to seeing it.
