There are times when something from the past
returns, not as memory, but as understanding.
There have been places, and times, where difference was not easily held.
Not through overt force, but through a quieter expectation:
Be the same, do not stand out, fit within what is already known.
It is rarely declared.
It settles instead into the background until it becomes part of what is considered
- normal.
When this happens, something subtle begins to occur.
Expression narrows. Possibility contracts.
And what does not fit is often misunderstood…
or gently redirected until it becomes more acceptable.
The cost is not always visible.
But it is felt in the spaces where there is less room to be as one is.
And yet— difference does not disappear.
It finds other ways to move: through quiet resilience. through humour,
through care, through small acts of attention and through ways of thinking that do not always match the expected form.
What is often called creativity is only one visible expression of something much wider.
Because there is a creative movement present in how life is lived:
in how people respond
in how they care
in how they continue
in how they hold one another
in how they shape what is given to them.
Sometimes this movement has space to express itself openly.
Sometimes it is held within structure, responsibility, or expectation—
and it moves more quietly.
But it does not disappear.
Where difference is not easily held, there is a narrowing around what is allowed.
And in those places, something else becomes possible:
a softening
a widening
a subtle return of space
Not always through large gestures.
Often through presence.
Through the simple act of not closing down what does not immediately fit.
It is not the difference that needs to be corrected.
It is the space around it that is asked to expand.

The room does not name what is missing—
it simply allows more to be present.
